IN A PICKLE

PICKLISH PLAY: Claudia McCracken (right) watches as teammate Camilla Bowman hits a whiffle ball back to the other side of the net in a game of pickle ball on Wednesday afternoon at the Witham Family YMCA. The sport was added this year as part of the Boone County Senior Services Olympics. Similar to tennis and badminton, it involves hitting a green whiffle ball back and forth, until the winning team scores 11 points. Though McCracken and Bowman lost 11-10 to opponents Ken and Vicki Carr, both said they enjoyed the sport.
Vicki Carr said she'd never played before but had a great time.
"It was very fun," she said. "And winning makes it more fun."
Several seniors had suggested the sport after last year's Olympics, said BCSSI executive director Anita Bowen. The YMCA already had a league and gave lessons, so they decided to go ahead. Sixteen seniors signed up to play pickle ball this year.
