FIGHTING FIRE WITH FIRE: Lebanon City Councilman Corey Kutz, his son Jackson Kutz and Lebanon Fire Chief Chuck Batts watch as crews from the Whitestown, Lebanon and Zionsville fire departments run a training drill.
The drill requires the firefighters to rescue a dummy, which represents a downed teammate, from inside the training tower, located behind the Boone County Jail. The firefighters, split into five teams, take turns at different tasks, including rescuing the dummy, lifting him onto the roof, and keeping the fire going inside the tower.
Zionsville firefighter Sam Alley said that the department looks forward to the training sessions, though the intensity of this event – which the departments conduct two to three times per year – can exhaust the men in just a few minutes.
"It's harder than any work out," he said. "But we get a lot out of it. It's important to get our here and simulate this and build teamwork in case, God forbid, the real thing happens."
