PIE IN THE SKY

CREATIVE COOKERY WINNERS: For the second year in a row, Kathy Budreau was named overall champion of the Boone County 4-H Fair Extension Homemakers Creative Cookery contest. Using this year's theme of grapes, Budreau made a concord grape pie with strudel topping. Shown above are the contest winners, from left: Becky Cheetham (dessert and muffins), Barbara McPeake (cake), Kathy Budreau (overall, pie, candy), and Margery Reeves (cookies). Budreau said that the grape pie she brought to the contest was the first one she ever made. "I'm a mad scientist in the kitchen," she said. Judge Karen Lackey said that the pie was chosen because of the great flavor of the grapes and its excellence overall. When judging a flavor-themed contest the most important factor is the incorporation of that theme, and Budreau's pie represented the grape theme best. "It had such an intense grape flavor," Lackey said. "It was beautifully done and had great eye appeal. It was overall a fantastic pie."
